AUTOESCUELA

Autoescuela is an atypical band. The northern Spanish duo, born during the first wave of what came to be known as bedroom pop, created a handful of records filled with microscopic pop anthems hidden inside wild and unruly arrangements, such as Club Deportivo Raíces or Quattro. Restless by nature, its members have continued to collaborate on projects that range from digital rumba to industrial music and ’70s folk rock. Now they reunite with a new album that promises to be a leap of faith — a love letter to punk and rawness. The latest incarnation of Autoescuela appeals to the gut, to the visceral — both literally and figuratively. Perfect pop melodies emerge from layers of noise, with twisted song structures — reminiscent of The Residents — that give way to subtle nods to ’60s pop or ghostly lamentations. Watching them live, one can’t help but think: “What just happened?”
