Beyond the countless merits, achievements and awards of Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s latest film — and even among them — the soundtrack to “As Bestas” stands as a work with its own identity. In a register previously unfamiliar for Olivier Arson, the artist behind Territoire, “As Bestas” unfolds through orchestral landscapes of strings, winds and percussion that move subtly and almost imperceptibly from beauty to tension. With only subtle touches of the electronic textures and synthesizers that usually define Arson’s work — building gradually in intensity as the narrative progresses — the fifteen tracks of “As Bestas” echo timeless references such as Fumio Hayasaka’s compositions for Kurosawa or the symbiosis between Popol Vuh and Herzog.
