Sal del Coche are the freest band one could imagine. So free that they can hardly even be defined as a conventional band, but rather as a fluid collective orbiting around Lizardi, Alberto and Jangitz — three musicians from Biscay for whom the idea of genre is little more than a sad and limiting obstacle. Because if you can merge grime, no-wave, footwork, ASMR, neoclassical influences and virtually any sonic element you can think of into cohesive and fully formed songs — then what are genres? Little more than words carried away by the wind. Sal del Coche are pure music in motion, pure deconstruction of any prior pattern — of post-punk, dance electronics and hip hop alike. They make bodies move until every vertebra cracks, like a punk-funk group that knows Hecho, Es Simple by heart, or a band that emerged from No New York and landed on the banks of the Nervión estuary with the Hyperdub catalogue under its arm. They are an explosion of dance energy, melodic twists and creative freedom — bringing colour to the grey that surrounds us. That is Sal del Coche today. What they will be tomorrow? Who knows — perhaps not even them. And maybe it’s better that way.
