JAI/EGUN

Like a secret, Aitor Martínez Merino has been working on an imaginary album from his room over the years. With no previous experience in other projects and no live performances under his belt, he eventually decided to professionally record everything he had been shaping for almost a lifetime at El Tigre Studios with Jon Aguirrezabalaga — to whom we will always be grateful for helping make it possible to release such an important record.

We return to that room — a dark space where Arthur Russell, Fugazi, Mikel Laboa and Tomatito might coexist. The references are mentioned only as a way to suggest a universe, because Aitor’s proposal is so personal and bold that it almost defines its own genre. In the end, the names become secondary. What remains are unexpected cadences, turns and progressions through which jai/egun draws on a language that feels universal and primal.

With lyrics in Basque and built almost exclusively around a Spanish guitar played with both rage and grace, jai/egun delivers an authentic exercise in introspection — opening a window into his life and inner world. The result is a deeply moving album: at times desolate, at times warm and surprising — and already poised to become one of the records of the year. Not just because we say so (and yes, this is a press release), but because it genuinely feels like one of the most sincere albums released in a landscape often filled with gloss and superficiality.
