SERPE

Martín Nieto, Galician-born but Madrid-raised, aka Serpe, began composing at 18, and after two years of work on his debut, he has chosen Abrazar el vacío (Embracing the Void) as his introduction to the music world. Abrazar el vacío is an exceptional record with a meticulously crafted sound. Built around the concept of a well whose walls begin to crumble (with the sounds of real falling rocks—every sound on the album was recorded by him), the album traces a journey that culminates in the collapse of the structure, simultaneously opening a new horizon. Who would expect a 20-year-old to create a record that seems to draw from Nurse With Wound, Raime, or Puce Mary? With a debut like this, one can only wonder what’s yet to come.
